Economic and Social Research Council seminar


The Economic and Social Research Council held a seminar at UWE Bristol on 16th May to discuss civil society, risk and climate change. 

The main headings were:
Challenges and constraints of communicating about climate change;
Creative arts approaches to these challenges;
How can arts, science and community work together to build resilience?

Although wide ranging, the discussions were clearly relevant to community energy work. Some resources are noted below for those interested in the communications issues in CE.

Footprints and Offsets

    The term carbon footprint can apply to a single event, such as a journey, but often refers to the greenhouse gases (GHGs) produced by an individual or organisation in a complete year, resulting from factors such as travel, diet, and the use of goods and energy. Carbon footprints can be estimated using a carbon calculator, and the resulting figure is typically given in equivalent tonnes of carbon dioxide (tCO2e). Many online calculators will also suggest that the user buys carbon offsets based on the size of the carbon footprint calculated; for example, informed of an economy return flight from London to New York, one calculator stated that 1.8 t CO2 had been produced, and that this could be offset by a payment of £42 to “carbon offset projects in developing and newly industrialising countries”. Climate fiction and climate action

The interactions between climate fiction and environmental activism are the subject of a paper by Alacovska and Holt (2023). They describe environmental activism as “grassroots, decentralised social movements” which attempt to address issues of “inequality and systemic injustice arising from anthropogenic climate change, environmental degradation and ecological collapse” by means of non-hierarchical collective organising. The main object of their paper is to propose methods for future research, but here we will only draw on their introduction to the subject and its background. They believe that the popular genre of climate fiction influences climate activism , with the potential to stimulate the imagination and to energise the “quest for the attainment of better climate alternatives”.
