Electric Vehicles, Regen and OLEV

A September forum on ‘Electric vehicles and electricity system’ included a presentation by Nick Brooks, head of energy, OLEV, entitled “Road to Zero Strategy and Investment in Charging Infrastructure”, followed by a panel discussion.

(OLEV is the Office for Low Emission Vehicles, part of the UK Departments for Transport and for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy. See: https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/office-for-low-emission-vehicles )
A presentation by Nicks Brooks, “Driving the rEVolution” is available online from Regen, the forum organiser, at:
This concentrates on UK government policy and targets and is in the form of illustrated bullet points, providing headings for discussion.
A paper from Regen entitled “Harnessing the Electric Vehicle Revolution”, is wider ranging, and provides a background to the forum. It views an electric transport system as an inevitable response to climate change, air pollution and traffic congestion, and explores the likely consequences, considering whether the trajectory of growth “will be exponential, explosive or stagnated”.
The perspective is that of energy, and two key questions are addressed: how EV charging can be integrated with overall energy demand and supply to ensure a secure and balanced system, and how, at a local level, charging multiple vehicles can be supported by a distribution network developed to provide low voltage electricity to meet diversified demand. The paper examines, among other issues, strategies to mitigate potential grid impacts; peak demand reduction; “smart” solutions, cities and transport systems; managing the network and demand intervention. It assumes that electrification of transport will be part of a decarbonisation programme, and therefore addresses this only briefly in the section on “Optimising value from renewable energy”.
